With Alyson Hannigan preggers in real life, I was wondering if the baby issue would be broached between Lily and Marshall. This episode answered my wonderings, but also, to my great surprise (although anyone could have seen it coming from a mile away), applied the very same subject matter to another member of the group. Need a hint? Visit the amazing www.NotAFathersDay.com to find out, and while you’re there, buy some merchandise! On to the show!

This episode answered my wonderings, but also, to my great surprise (although anyone could have seen it coming from a mile away), applied the very same subject matter to another member of the group. Barney got some bad news: He might be a father. The one-night stand is visiting the doctor soon to confirm. Poor Barney. Why in the world want to be a parent? Why don’t we ask Lily and Marshall… they’re thinking about the very same thing, and they’re quite a bit more excited about making a baby than Barney.

The problem? Robin, who is unemployed and homeless, is crashing at their house while also crashing the mood. The solution? Have Robin spend one night crashing at Ted’s apartment. That should work out well, right?

As Lily and Marshall plan their big night, Barney gets word that the whole scare was a false alarm, and for one brief moment, we see Broadway Barney, spinning and leaping through the streets of NYC. So overjoyed is he about not being a dad that he decides to create a new holiday: Not a Father’s Day. While pitching the idea to Marshall in his office, the boss walks in to remind Marshall about the evening conference call to China, spoiling the baby making plan of the evening.

Lily is disappointed… at first. After a few glasses of wine, she realizes she is relieved. She is scared to death of becoming a parent and thinks she and Marshall are not ready at all. She knows Ted loves the idea of kids and Robin thinks it is totally stupid, so she invites them over to help her make the decision, a sort of Angel/Devil on the shoulder thing.

Both arguments are valid. Robin reminds Lily of the size of Marshall’s head, Ted reminds Lily of the joy of having children. Robin accuses Ted of already being a Dad himself with all the corn jokes and the “I’m disappointed” talks, Ted accuses Robin of being scared of babies with all the running away and screaming at the talking baby commercial.

In the end, it is a stray, cute little baby sock left by the neighbor that makes Lily’s decision for her: She wants to have a kid. An entire bottle of wine late, she shows up at Marshall’s work in her nightie. This is not going to turn out well. Lily is acting like a baby… literally. She cries if Marshall takes her bottle away, she gets into everything, she spits up, she even sleeps if you drive her around the block once or twice, which is just what Marshall does. Looks like he’s becoming a dad already…

At MacLarens, Ted and Robin continue the argument about the pros and cons of parenthood. She pretty much calls Ted a wussy girl and he all but says she is a heartless guy. But then… Ted finds the little sock in Robin’s purse. There is a spark of hope that someday, Robin might be open to the idea of kids. I mean, the sock is just so cute!

The next morning, Lily and Marshall have the talk. Lily is ready, and after last night, Marshall decides he is not. They settle on him telling her when he’s ready and they’ll go from there. Hmmm… what about the REAL pregnancy of Alyson? We’ll see…

One last bit of bad news: Barney found the baby sock and it sent him over the edge. Dunk karaoke with the song “Cats in the Cradle” will never be the same.

What do YOU think? Do you have Baby Fever? Or are you scared of babies? Do you think Robin moving in with Ted is as bad an idea as I do? Give us your Two Cents… We’ll go buy baby socks.

Next Week: Woooo!
